Now let’s just preface this by acknowledging that I am possibly one of the biggest almond milk latte aficionados about town 😉 I would never suggest denying one their morning coffee, afternoon latte or evening espresso! Let’s be clear!
But I do hear a lot of my friends and people in general talking about how they want to cut back on caffeine, but how they feel they need it etc… And of course there are always studies out there who show the benefit of caffeine, coffee, etc… That being said, I am a firm believer in moderation, moderation, moderation! Everything in moderation! So no one has to completely cut out coffee or caffeine, but in case you are looking for an alternative a few mornings a week, here are some that I have found to work for me:
- Eat an apple. Really! It’s that easy. Having an apple in the morning instead of your morning coffee is also a ritual, eating, chewing, crunching, and enjoying sweet/sour apple flavors. Not to mention a great source of fiber, and will give you the energy you need to jump start the day.
- Do morning yoga stretches. Today is a perfect example, it took me probably 5 whole minutes to get out of bed, which I am usually one who gets up at the sound of the alarm. I was just so tired! So I got up, went to my living room, and started sequences of sun salutations and yoga stretches. I could feel my body warming up, blood flowing, and energy spreading. I felt awake and energized after to get my day going!
- Go out for a quick jog/run! Or a brisk walk. Even in you only have 15 minutes, don’t think about it, and just do it. A morning jog is one of the best ways to get me going for the day, especially when its cold out 😉
- Sometimes just the act of drinking and holding something warm is helpful, so in winter months especially, I drink a lot more tea. And of course there are many options with different levels of caffeine, or no caffeine, so you can adjust accordingly 😉 Another favorite alternative is hot water with honey and lemon, this can also fulfill the “placebo” effect of drinking a hot coffee first thing in the morning.
So if you are in the boat of wanting to cut back on the amount of coffee you drink, or you want to ingest less caffeine, or simply if you want to save some money and only buy 3 coffees per week instead of 6- I challenge you to try these out and see if they work for you!
