How to make the perfect smoothie & smoothie bowl – secrets revealed ;)


One of my FAVORITE ways to start the day is with a solid smoothie/smoothie bowl. I have found that being constantly on the go, smoothies are both a super nourishing and beautiful way to get my daily servings of fruits, veggies, and many other vitamins. I have experimented in many ways and with many ingredients over the years with my trusty Ninja (and its smoothie serving attachment!), and the breakdown I have figured is like this:

  1. Start with a solid base
  2. Add your texture
  3. Add toppings! (the best part)


Base: So my favorite smoothie base for about 90% of my smoothies include: 1/2 fresh or frozen banana, a handful of spinach or kale for a veggie serving, fresh squeezed orange juice for vitamin c, and almond milk. If I am going for a non-veggie smoothie (ie: my pumpkin pie spice smoothie, banana nut butter smoothie, avocado chocolate smoothie, etc- I will skip this base and create one better suited for the flavors)

Texture: includes anything from Greek/un-strained yogurt*, ice, fresh or  frozen fruits (such as strawberries, blueberries, etc), beets, avocado or pumpkin/squash for thickening, more almond milk for smoother texture, peanut butter or almond butter for chunkiness, you get the picture 😉

Toppings: in my eyes, this is the part of the smoothie that makes it not only aesthetically pleasing, but inspires me to get creative and add more vitamins and depth to the smoothie! Seeds, raw nuts, berries, coconut, granola, oats, beautifully sliced fruits such as kiwis, persimmons, and if you have taken a slight look at my blog- FIGS!!! Anything to add extra vitamins and beauty to the smoothie;)

Blending these ingredients together, and then adding various toppings, makes a smoothie a wonderful part of morning and a really healthful, beautiful, and mindful way to start the day. So get blending!! Feel free to share your smoothie favorites 🙂

*I know, I eat yogurt but only drink non-dairy milks… it’s wierd! But you have to go with what feels right to you and your body and my stomach feels better on non-dairy beverages
