Finally back from traveling! It was amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat! On our travels, we were mindful, active and ready to have a healthy, happy and safe trip, and thankfully all went very well!
Mental prep: Getting ready to be traveling, knowing that we would be going from city to city, taking lots of trains, planes, etc, but also walking a lot, and wanting to enjoy the sites, food and culture- these were all things I was thinking about before we left. I think this sort of mental preparation made it the best kind of traveling for us.I knew we were going to be constantly busy, on the go, seeing sites- and of course eating! and I didn’t want to miss any of it!
Activity: Every day we walked A TON, and did many other physical activities such as yoga, running on the beach, swimming, hiking- you name it. And because we got to see most of the sites on foot, it made it a much more active and enjoyable trip.
Food: OMG – the food was amazing! In each and every destination. We went with a general rule of thumb- to enjoy some treats per location (ie one special treat per day), and the rest of that day’s meals to be eaten mindfully and healthily. It was not at all difficult to find many healthy options in each location. Some of these amazing foods included:
London- exquisite teas, scones, curries, meat pies, stewed tomato dishes, delicious Thai food, fresh fruit and juices
Amsterdam- rijsttafel (Indonesian rice dishes), Vlaamse frites (Flemish fries), fresh breads, cheeses, as well as many healthy salads, fresh fruits, veggies, and smoothies
Brussels- delicious and delicate meat dishes, tons of fresh fruit and veggies, and of course- chocolate and a delectable Belgian waffle 🙂
Paris- amazing coffees, veggie quiches, steak tartar, delicious wine, cheeses, exotic fruits
Mexico (Playa del Carmen)- so many fruits!! fresh tomato salsa, corn tortillas, fish, lots of grilled and fresh veggies…
The most important thing to do while traveling is be aware of your surroundings- by knowing where you are, what the people and culture is like, taking it all in so you can fully enjoy the experience. And a true bonus is sharing the experience with wonderful people- your partner, family and friends. D and I were mainly by ourselves for about half the trip, and then saw family in Paris, friends in London, and both family and friends in Mexico. It was a perfect combination and we can’t wait to start planning the next.
